About that gift horse …
It’s very nice, and quite shrewd, of Thresher to have dropped their 40% off voucher into the ether. It’s giving the viral marketing geeks loads to talk about, and more than a handful of blogs have picked it up.
But hang on a mo.
I live a few doors down from a Thresher - no, before you ask, that’s not why we bought the house. But I do patronise it fairly regularly. I enjoy the RAF stories of the gentleman who works there, and they sell a decent range of Ben & Jerry’s. Point being, ever since we moved in they’ve been doing three-for-two on all wine and champagne, an effective 33% off.
So, not to look a gift horse in the mouth or anything, but the 40% voucher is actually only worth 7.67%.
Still not a bad saving, but it doesn’t sound quite as viral as 40%, does it?
Pssst! If you want more vouchers … Selfridges GAP Borders

Actually James, if you’re being precise, the voucher is only worth 6.67% not 7.67%
Fair cop, Geoff. And I always thought I was good at sums.
To make matters worse, I’ve just left the 7.67% figure in part of a comment over at Richard’s blog …
Can you use the voucher online or in store only?
I have just walked to Threshers on Queens Park Road, Brighton (in the rain) and had my voucher turned down as it wasnt printed in COLOUR! Bonkers
This is a great post - both because it makes the point about the real saving only being 7% (so why is everyone so excited?) and because I brought that to your attention - a little credit for your lovely wife?!?
Mrs H: A very good question, but not one to which I know the answer I’m afraid.
Nick: Strikes me as more than a little unsporting. If you’re in the vicinity of Soho Square, pop in and I’ll print you off a colour copy.
C: You’ve always been my inspiration :)
In store only from what I hear…
James, absolutely right about the 40% not being much more than usual. I think it works as it “sounds” huge!! Would love to scrutinise their P@L this month!
